ALL-STAR game for Nigeria football?

Image
The Nigerian Premier league is the highest division for football in the Nigeria football association. The league was established in the year 1972 marking its 50 th anniversary this year. The structure of the NPL is similar to most football top division leagues with having 20 teams each year and a relegation zone of the bottom four to allow the division below (Nigerian national league) to have their top four teams promoted. Like many other leagues, from the lack of sustainable funding and misuse of fortunes, the league has suffered in popularity and prestige. It being the 50 th anniversary of the league’s existence, it brings a reflection on how the league has panned out over the past years and how the federation can improve the standards. Current Chelsea owner and chairman, Todd Boehly, recently had an interview with a New York conference and discussed the idea of an all-star game like in the NBA and MLB in America, to be introduced in the English Premier league. The idea raised a

Ponmo Ban

Image
The Federal Government has stated that it will be proposing legislation to ban the consumption of animal skin, locally known as ponmo, in the nation to therefore revive the leather industry. Muhammad Yakubu, the Director General of Nigeria Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILETS), stated “the legislation was necessary to revive the comatose leather industry in the country, the habit of eating animal skin, which has no nutritional value, should be stopped to save the industry and boost the nation's economy”. NILETS was set up to promote leather production as provided in the Agricultural Research Institute Act of 1975. However, Nigerians who heard of the proposal, took to twitter to wrangle and dispute the government’s will. Apparently, banning ponmo should be the least of our focuses as they believe the country is facing more urgent problems that require greater attention. The popular outcry from the proposal was the alternative for Nigerians to buy instead of ponmo ,

Hailstorm go away- Nigeria

Image
In the northern territories of Nigeria, there have been reports of snow and hail been seen which is considered a very rare occurrence. It was on the 13 th  of September 2022 that the city of Katsina observed its latest weather phenomenon as hail was seen falling for at least an hour continuously. The locals as expected took the scenario with a great surprise as many took to social media to share the rare moment. Snow fall is very common in certain times of the year in mostly regions in the northernmost half of the northern hemisphere and polar regions. Apart from certain areas in South Africa and mountain peaks, it is very unusual to see snow in any other parts of Africa. In Nigeria this is not the first rodeo of having the unexpected hailstorm, however it brings the question on why this occurs. When temperatures drop below freezing, usually at least -2 degrees, snow begins to fall in those conditions. In Nigeria, which is a tropical nation, the average temperatures are between 25-

ASUU strike and the Protest for Progress.

Image
On September 19 th , 2022, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), disrupted the activities at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, in protest of the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike which started around February of the year 2022. The strike had meant that staff members of ASUU will refrain from work in their universities, meaning students are unable to attend lectures or seminars. ASUU began their strike on February 14 th to protest the Federal Government, due to the FG’s neglect of the demands of the ASUU, in which was agreed to be signed and implemented by the government in 2009. ASSU Chairman, University of Ibadan, Prof. Akinwole Ayoola , stated the FG claims were lies. He explained “if ASUU does not go on this struggle, there will be no university for new people to attend,” he further stated- “in the last 25 years, FG will not spend money on their university unless ASUU goes on strike”.  Students have been unable to attend thei

Gov. Wike and the PDP divide.

Image
Tension in the People’s Democratic Party is bad news for the leading opposition party in Nigeria politics and with the upcoming general elections, the rift and division in the party could prove costly for the party’s Presidential elect Atiku Abubakar. The main event of a series of bouts comes as a rift between the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike and the National chairman of their party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu . Mr Ayu has been under a lot of pressure from many of his party members (including Governor Wike), to step down. There are many speculations on why Gov. Wike is against the Party Chairman, but the Wike group had complained on the imbalance in PDP leadership as both Party Chairman and Presidential candidate are from the Northern territories of Nigeria. It’s been argued that the rift between the two PDP party leaders and Wike had developed after Atiku had chosen Delta state Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate over Wike,  after the Rivers state governor had been said to have g
