ASUU strike and the Protest for Progress.

On September 19th, 2022, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), disrupted the activities at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, in protest of the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike which started around February of the year 2022. The strike had meant that staff members of ASUU will refrain from work in their universities, meaning students are unable to attend lectures or seminars.

ASUU began their strike on February 14th to protest the Federal Government, due to the FG’s neglect of the demands of the ASUU, in which was agreed to be signed and implemented by the government in 2009. ASSU Chairman, University of Ibadan, Prof. Akinwole Ayoola, stated the FG claims were lies. He explained “if ASUU does not go on this struggle, there will be no university for new people to attend,” he further stated- “in the last 25 years, FG will not spend money on their university unless ASUU goes on strike”.

Students have been unable to attend their universities that are part of ASUU and vowed to extend the protest to the Papa Wharf and Tin Can Island ports as well as the Third Mainland Bridge. Until ASUU strike is called off, we won’t stop- NANS. In relations to the protest, several passengers consequently missed their flights, as operators flew half-empty out of Lagos.

It is clear the situation is becoming increasingly pressing and having negative external effects in the state of Lagos and potentially with other states to follow if nothing changes.
