Gov. Wike and the PDP divide.

Tension in the People’s Democratic Party is bad news for the leading opposition party in Nigeria politics and with the upcoming general elections, the rift and division in the party could prove costly for the party’s Presidential elect Atiku Abubakar. The main event of a series of bouts comes as a rift between the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike and the National chairman of their party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu. Mr Ayu has been under a lot of pressure from many of his party members (including Governor Wike), to step down.

There are many speculations on why Gov. Wike is against the Party Chairman, but the Wike group had complained on the imbalance in PDP leadership as both Party Chairman and Presidential candidate are from the Northern territories of Nigeria. It’s been argued that the rift between the two PDP party leaders and Wike had developed after Atiku had chosen Delta state Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate over Wike, after the Rivers state governor had been said to have gained mass support from other party leaders.

The magnitude of the party’s division became more obvious after the trade of words and disrespect between Wike and Ayu. Wike had accused the Chairman of being arrogant and working against the demands of party members. Ayu on the other hand replied in an interview with the BBC, describing those people speaking against his leadership abilities as ‘children’. He stated, “when we started the PDP, we did not know these boys, they are children.”

The perspective of the matter is that Atiku Abubakar will not turn on Ayu, the man who greatly influenced the success of his PDP primary election to satiate Wike. On the other hand, Wike wants Ayu, the man who has disrespected him and other members of the PDP, as well as quenching his presidential ambitions, to be removed from office at all costs. If the tension is not resolved sooner than later, the elections could prove dire for the PDP.
