Peter Obi, A force to reckon with

Peter Obi is a man that has undoubtably taken the Nigerian social media space by storm. He is a Nigerian businessman and politician that has served as the Governor of Anambra state from March 2006 to his impeachment in November 2006, reinstated in February to May 2007, and from June 2007 to March 2014. The ex-Governor has had a career in business and finance, being the chairman of fidelity Bank before leaving his position to face the Politics of Nigeria.

The man poised with resilience and a mindset of anti-corruption has emboldened the youth of Nigeria and fortified his name as a serious candidate for the 2023 elections. His followers call themselves the Obi- dients and have seen a glimpse of hope and prosperity by his words of encouragement and support to the ‘100 million poor that are not sure where the next meal is coming from’. The country of Nigeria where the average age is 18 has shown a different path for political and social acceptance, proving that attending to the younger generation with the right promises does matter more than previously thought.

Young people accounted for half of voters in 2019, and 84% of the 10.49 million recently registered voters were aged 34 or below. Youths are volunteering for his campaign in multitudes, using their own money to print campaigning tools for him. The battle for Presidency has always been primarily between two major parties in the past 25 years, however the 2023 elections will most definitely pan out to be a different tale. The youth who are from a youthful nation are trending to be at his side and have seemed to have woken up to be ready for the decision day. It is not clear who will win as many factors will certainly come to play, but Obi and his labour party are a force that might change Nigerian politics unprecedently.
