Akeredolu- I want to protect my people

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has made headlines with his vow to acquire weapons for Amotekun, a state security network, in order to tackle crime and ‘protect the people’. Amotekun is a western Nigeria security outfit based in all six states of the Southwestern, Nigeria, responsible for tackling and curbing insecurities in the regions. Ondo state which Rotimi Governs has had to deal with vile extreme terrorism with the Owo Church attack being the most infamous of the sundry. Rotimi has grown distressed with the matters and had stated the need to supply automatic weaponry for the security network.

Peter Obi in his recent visit to the Ondo state Governor, commended Akeredolu for his commitment to ensuring the protection of the livelihoods and security of the people of Ondo. Obi described the Governor as a leader who always speaks the truth no matter the consequence. However, the leader of the Federal Government, President Buhari, was not in agreement with the Ondo state Governor, stating “no state can arm security outfits.” The President clarified that he has not granted an approval for the use of arms and ammunition for any state or regional security outfit, only the National security adviser is empowered to authorize the use of arms and ammunition by security outfit, following clearance from Commander in chief meaning Buhari himself.

Akeredolu in reply, accused the FG of double standard and preventing Amotekun of protecting the people. He explained the FG had approved for the Katsina state, to equip local security with arms which is unfair as he would not allow the Ondo state Governor to do the same. Senior special assistant to the president, Mallam Garba Shehu, replied “the Presidency wishes to strongly assert that there is no state, not Katsina, not any other state in the federation, that has been authorized to procure automatic weapons for their security outfits.”
