ALL-STAR game for Nigeria football?

The Nigerian Premier league is the highest division for football in the Nigeria football association. The league was established in the year 1972 marking its 50th anniversary this year. The structure of the NPL is similar to most football top division leagues with having 20 teams each year and a relegation zone of the bottom four to allow the division below (Nigerian national league) to have their top four teams promoted. Like many other leagues, from the lack of sustainable funding and misuse of fortunes, the league has suffered in popularity and prestige.

It being the 50th anniversary of the league’s existence, it brings a reflection on how the league has panned out over the past years and how the federation can improve the standards. Current Chelsea owner and chairman, Todd Boehly, recently had an interview with a New York conference and discussed the idea of an all-star game like in the NBA and MLB in America, to be introduced in the English Premier league. The idea raised a few nervy eyebrows in the sports media world of the UK; however, the idea is something the NPL could take into consideration.

The NPL arguably does not have the awareness and funding to reach the potential it has, and poor management has hindered its popularity. The Popular all-star games held in the US leagues could change this in more ways than people know. The reason for this is because the event has proven to generate an outstanding boost on franchise marketing and capital revenue. There is the NPFL all-star team that plays against other teams around the world, however this does not give much focus on marketing for the league. There are many ways one could organise the all-star game event, but the result targeted is the hype and awareness that comes from it. Todd Boehly said, “the MLB All-star game this year made 200 million dollars from a Monday and Tuesday,” the results might not be as grand in Nigeria, but it will certainly drive more interest in the nation of 200 million people. More importantly it’ll expose more branding for the special players as they get more attention, as well as appreciation for their talents.
