D-day for crime?

Security is considerd one of the main societal functions of a government as they provide laws that are placed for the equality and protection of people’s liberty. Nigeria in recent years is having a crisis in the rate of crimes occurring around the country. Due to the expansion of social media and information the cases seem to be more serious and concerning for citizens. A question on why the rate of crime for the wealthiest nation in the continent of Africa is becoming increasingly pressing and solutions are desperately being searched for now more than ever before.

The Global Peace Index ranked it the world's 17th least peaceful state. Discussion of crime in Nigeria tends to focus on insurgency, terrorism, and kidnapping, but other types of crime are thriving too. As the elections draw closer, it is becoming a pivotal topic for promising candidates to address. Nigeria's military has secured the release of the remaining 23 hostages from a train attack by gunmen in northern Kaduna state in March, which saw dozens kidnapped and six others killed, a defence official stated. This is one of many criminal activities that had made headlines this year.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has assured Nigerians that the insecurity bedevilling the country would be over by December. Mr Aregbesola gave the assurance when he was featured on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja. The Minister had spoken on behalf of the President, confirming the President has given a December deadline for the security forces to restore order and stability in all parts of the country. However, what changes to the military forces to ensure this target has not been mentioned. Following the next activities by the security forces of Nigeria on tackling crime would be priority for many Nigerians, in the hope that the government keep their word of peace going into the new year
